Zambulance 1

It’s not only high tech gadgets that make a difference. Low tech devices like the Zambulance is playing a critical role in saving lives in Africa.

The Zambulance, a bicycle-mounted portable ambulance made by Zambikes of Zimbabwe, has begun providing basic, life-saving ambulance services in early trials throughout Zimbabwe.

A simple bicycle trailer stocked with a waterproof mattress that lets patients lie flat comfortably and a curtain for privacy as well as shelter from the heat and rain, the Zambulance also has options like intravenous hangers.

Over the 4-month trial period, 40 Zambulances were used 82 tines, with 86 of those considered “life-saving”. One Ugandan community went from having approximately 30 women a year die in childbirth to none after a year of using this bicycle ambulance. Another study showed that a Zambulance saves one life for every nine days it’s in use. Numbers show that this simple, low tech device is making a big difference where it’s needed.
