Genie Timeline Free is the freeware version of the mainstream backup and restore software from Genie-Soft. Despite trumpeting the fact that it is the world’s first free complete backup software, it’s not. It is not the world’s first, nor the most complete, but hey, this is marketing right?

As a basic protection it’s fairly OK. There’s no scheduling, no bare metal restore with recovery disks, no compression, and no auto purging of older backups, all of which makes the product much less than complete.

What it does have is a nice simple user interface via a backup wizard, and some nice features such as auto resume for times when your backup hard drive may not be available. I also like the simplicity of the timeline restore function. All in all this is suitable for your granny’s first backup and for that reason alone we’re saying it’s worth a look.
