Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets Android 2.1 upgrade…for some…

Sonyericssonexperiax10

So the rollout of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 update to Android 2.1 has finally started in earnest. I just upgraded and it’s transformed the handset…from a rather pedestrian phone to a very classy piece of equipment which holds its own against anything else in the world.

Yes I know it sounds strange that a simple upgrade can deliver a completely new phone, but in this case it really has. The old X10 suffered from a bloated, awkward user interface that was so cumbersome it actually put you off doing things. Like making a phone call. Seriously.

The new 2.1 interface is all business and zero fluff, which lets you really enjoy the beautifully responsive screen and controls of the phone as they should be enjoyed. Not to mention the fact that users will now be able to access all the latest Android goodies from Market and beyond. I’ll keep testing the thing to see what else stands out as I have a feeling there’s a bunch of stuff that’s been fixed, the phone really feels crisper and more responsive in every way.

So here’s the real beauty of Android, a brand new state of the art mobile phone for the price of a download. Awesome!

  • If you root your phone via http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?… you can get many unlocked and awesome features. In some cases, the fixes are found and mended before the manufacturer.

    • Yep, I unlocked it before the ungrade with X10root.apk and it worked fine with the Barnacle tethering app. :) Not sure whether I can do it again now with 2.1 installed. Nevertheless it's still a pretty awesome phone all round now.

I had it running Waze GPS, Bluetooth beaming music to my car stereo, and took a photo of a traffic jam simultaneously last night and it worked like a charm.

You need to remember to switch off background data though, if you want battery life to be reasonable, but that's a generic smartphone issue methinks, rather than something wrong with this particular model. 3G data just sucks up power.

  • Good to hear that SE Xperia X10 is finally a real thing.
However, I still think to buy X10 or HTC Desire?
    Suggestion?

    • Hmm…very close call.

X10 = 8 megapixel camera, lovely looks, and a really lovely 4 inch screen

Desire = HTC Sense UI, inbuilt tethering, better user support all round.

Play with both in a store and see which you prefer?

  • Man, I wished I held out buying my GSM HTC Hero. I have no flash and only 5MP. Oh well, I guess its now my GPS power-horse (thanks to CoPilot, Google Maps, and iGO).
