Yahoo to let you login to their services with a Google or Facebook account

Here is an interesting bit of news. It would seem that Yahoo will soon no longer require a Yahoo account in order for you to use their services. You can instead use either a Google or Facebook login via OpenID if you want to use Flickr, or any of the company’s other offerings.

My real question for this (as it hasn’t gone live just yet, though it should later today) is whether or not I’ll be able to use Yahoo Messenger with an OpenID. If so, this would be one more step closer to getting rid of the half-dozen IM accounts that I need to communicate with people. Either way, I applaud Yahoo for helping to eliminate the need for so many different accounts for various sites. It will be interesting to see if anyone else follows suit.
