Libraries are collaborating to let you borrow eBooks, just like real ones

I’m a big fan of eBooks. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy having a collection of physical books, but there’s something about carrying around dozens of books in my tablet, and the ability to pull one up and read it anywhere that gets me excited. Since buying my tablet, I’ve probably increased the amount of reading I do by threefold. The best part is that there are thousands of free books available out there for download.

With so many free eBooks out there, and eReaders becoming more popular, what will happen to our libraries? Well it would seem that they too are trying to embrace this new form of books. A number of public libraries have joined the efforts of Open Library to offer over 9,000 ebooks that you can check out for up to two weeks. These are just like their physical counterparts in that only one person can check them out at a time. You’ll also have to physically go to a participating library to do so. There aren’t a lot of branches currently supporting the effort, but hopefully more will in the future.
