As the top robot nation in the world, Japan does have to have every kind of robot available on the market. Therefore, a baby robot that can have an emotional effect on the user is just a little strange.
The Babyloid is a welfare robot that looks like an infant (if robots had infants), and has a movable mouth, arms, and eyelids. It weighs in at 2.2kg, which about 5 pounds, and measures 44cm in length. It can simulate some emotions such as being upset and has the ability to cry using lights on it’s face. Thankfully there’s no diaper to change or anything, but it’s definitely going to get a response from anyone who loves babies or has that “momdar”. (Mother radar for crying children) Prototypes are currently being used in nursing homes as a trial basis, but might be available for commercial release someday. Though they may be a little weird, they are still kind of cute.
