Asus motherboards to ship in boxes that can double as a PC case

If you’ve ever built your own PC, you know that there are a lot of things to consider when making a purchase. There are a good number of parts, each demanding a pretty penny. If you’re on a tight budget, you need to cut corners where you can, without sacrificing too much power. One of the first things to get bumped down on the list is the case. You can spend hundreds of dollars on a fancy one, or you can opt for something in the $30-$40 range that will do just fine. But what if you didn’t have to buy one at all?

That’s the idea behind Asus’s new motherboard packaging. The company has announced that all future Mini-ITX form-factor cases will ship in a box that can double as a PC case. Sure, it’s not the nicest one you’ll find, but you really can’t beat the price. Asus says that the cardboard cases are good for a year of use, but doesn’t recommend you keep it in use for much past that. I have to say, it’s definitely a good way to put off some of the cost of your new computer until you can afford the case you really want.
