There are those of us who can plainly accept something that is awesome. There are also those of us that accept it, but want to know why it is awesome. The iPad 2 was designed to have a cover that works as a stand, turn off when its case is on, and auto aligns when placed over the glass face. This is all done through the power of magnets, but iFixit wanted to know how many magnets, where they were, and pretty much all of its inner workings.
With a steady hand, they took the case under the knife and discovered that there were 31 magnets total in the iPad and its case. The iPad 2 held 10 magnets alone and the other 21 were found within the case. Theres nothing particularly special about said magnets, though one is dedicated to turn off the screen, theyre just plain old boring 2-pole magnets. Apple has just positioned them very carefully to make the case and tablet work extremely well together.
