Volkswagen Temporary Automatic Pilot – in Germany the car drives you…

Vwtemporaryautomaticpilot

The good folk at Volkswagen today introduced a new technology called Temporary Automatic Pilot which will apparently automatically control a car without human intervention at highway speeds. The system, which is still in testing, uses lane and vehicle sensing to keep on the straight and narrow, and the ‘semi-automatic’ bit means it can be overridden instantly by a human driver if things start to go awry.

We’re not saying that robots aren’t capable of handling cars at 130 km/h on a motorway, but we’re sure as eggs not going to be the first people out there testing this thing when it comes down the pike. Press Release. While we’re waiting for a video, here’s another bit of *very* cool vehicle automation for you to enjoy.

“The Temporary Auto Pilot (TAP) bundles semi-automatic functions, i.e. functions monitored by the driver, with other driver assistance systems, such as ACC adaptive cruise control and the Lane Assist lane-keeping system into one comprehensive function. “Nonetheless, the driver always retains driving responsibility and is always in control,” continues Leohold. “The driver can override or deactivate the system at any time and must continually monitor it.”

  • We need one of those to drive the Obama government. 'When things go awry!'

Oh, wait – they're waaay off track already.

  • I have used a sharp pocket knife all of my life (over 70 years). My grandson was amazed to see me sharpening a pencil. He even had to take hold of it to look more closely. Of course in the USA you'll be arrested for carrying a small knife to school. Sad but true.
