Easily download webcomics for offline browsing with Pilfer

Webcomics are one of my favorite things to spring up, thanks to the web. While I looked forward to reading the comic section of the newspaper, your material was severely limited by the space of the paper itself. What’s worse, if you missed a day, that comic was lost to you for years, unless you track down a copy of that days paper. Now you can sit down and easily peruse years of comic strips with little more than a click of a button. However, if you have a tablet, wouldn’t it be nice if you could simply dump an entire collection of a webcomic onto your device, and read it offline whenever you like? With just a little work, you can do that very thing.

Let me first start by saying that most webcomic artists make their money from pageviews and ad clicks. If you’re going to go through and download their collection, consider dropping a donation (if they have such a thing setup), buying one of their print books, or even visiting them if they appear at a convention nearby.

Now, if you really want to get a whole mess of comics onto your tablet, you can use a browser add-on called Pilfer (Chrome or Firefox) to grab all of the images. Granted, this only works if the image files are sequentially numbered. If they aren’t you’ll have to find another way to download them manually. Now, once you’ve grabbed copies of all of the comic images, you simply need to zip them up into a rar file, change the extension name, and import them into a comic book reader. For full step-by-step instructions on this process, check out this great guide.
