
I have a deep fascination with the steampunk movement. I’ve attended a number of conventions, and can occasionally be found dressing the part. My favorite part, however, are the creations that not use parts applicable to the imagined time period, but are also completely functional. This Steampunk Record Player is a fine example of such.
This record player is powered almost entirely by a small steam engine, which is regulated by a servo to keep the platter moving at the appropriate speed. There is a bit of modern technology keeping everything running smoothly though, as an Arduino processor is the main brains to the machine (which also uses batteries for power). The most amusing part is that you can use steam to listen to punk, as the creator shows in the video below. It’s a shame that the sound quality isn’t the best though.
