If you’ve ever suffered from food allergies, you know how that can cut into enjoying the foods you love. For those who are allergic to dairy or are lactose intolerant, that means no ice cream during hot summer days.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute – creative geniuses that they are – have come up with Lupinesse, a non-dairy ice cream alternative that reports say tastes pretty close to the real thing. Made from the seeds of the blue sweet lupin flowering plant, this delightful frozen treat contains no lactose, gluten, cholesterol, animal proteins or fats. Lupinesse does have some pretty cool benefits (besides taste, of course). The seeds of the blue lupin are high in protein, accounting for the treat’s creaminess, and the lupin protein also cholesterol-regulating effects.
BUT … Lupinesse has about the same amount of fat as regular ice cream, so you’ll have to go easy. Currently only available in Germany, Lupinesse comes in four yummy flavors: Vanilla-Cherry, Strawberry-Mousse, Walnut Dream and Choco-Flakes. Let’s hope the company opts for a VERY wide global distribution. I’ll stand in that line!
