inReach uses satellites to send text messages and GPS coordinates when you’re in danger

I can’t say that I spend a lot of time in areas where I’m unable to pick up a cell phone signal. Sure, I go hiking every now and then in the summer, but I’m usually with other people, and always at state parks where I’m in no real danger. However, for those that like to go hiking in areas where there aren’t lots of designated paths, or perhaps mountain climbing, where danger is lurking around the next ridge, you might be interested in the inReach from DeLorme.

This device may look like a simple two-way radio, however, it’s anything but. Rather than talking to another radio, it actually transmits signals back and forth to a satellite. If you find yourself in danger, you can just hit the SOS button, and a text is sent to one of several predetermined cell phone numbers. The text will contain precise GPS coordinates, so that you’re sure to be found. If you brought along an Android phone, the device will let you sent and receive text messages, without needing a cell tower. You’ll need to shell out $250 for the device, and $10 each month for service.

  • This is really useful when lost on a desert Island or stuck in a Jungle. Lets just hope the satellites arent too busy zooming into Chinese military installations.

  • Very useful stuff
