The original, made in the USA Bedfan, not associated with this unit, did not require you to get out of bed to adjust the speed. the only difference is that this china made version and the original American made version is that the remote for the original unit is wired, and fits under your pillow nicely. One other aspect of the original unit is that the top is flexible so that when people sit on the unit, which they will, it wont hurt the person that sits on it and it helps save the fan as well.
