If you’ve ever been stuck in an airport terminal and struggled to get the WiFi to work properly, you’ll know just how frustrating public net connections can be. They never seem to work when you need them most (nor, for that matter, do GPS map connections, but that’s another story). But now one enterprising company has the answer and it’s a very cool bit of technology all round.

Connectify Dispatch is a new software product which lets you combine multiple Internet connections into one in order to boost speed and reliability. The clever bit of code will cope with combining a 3G mobile connection with a WiFi connection and even a wired Ethernet connection, and can be set to balance the connections to optimize either speed or cost.

This is the sort of smart use of software which can really make a difference to how people consume the web. Most of us at one time or another have had to suffer from dodgy, intermittent mobile or WiFi connections, and the idea of being able to combine, say, your mobile phone data connection with a free cafe or store WiFi to get a decent speed is brilliant.

The company has a fair number of demos of combining connections, and in one case they manage to bond together seven WiFi, two mobile and one cable network connection to deliver a stonking 80mbps download speed on a laptop. Which should be fast enough for anyone. Of course you need access to that many accounts in order to do this kind of trick, but it’s an impressive demo nonetheless.

Connectify Dispatch is currently running on Kickstarter and is already fully funded, with delivery promised for the end of the year, at around $100 p.a. for a complete package of tools.
