Sometimes inventions, no matter how good they are or how useful, leave one a little breathless with surprise. It may be because they’re expensive, weird, or because they’re tackling a problem you didn’t know even existed. Well we’ve found one that seems to be none of the above, although it certainly looks like it’ll raise eyebrows wherever it’s used.

The UpRight Sleeper is a new invention which lets you sleep while sitting upright in a chair. Hence the name, geddit? Now that’s a worthy goal no question, it’s just that we’re wondering who would ever have the courage to whip one of these out on the train, bus or plane and actually risk the sniggers from fellow travelers?

As if the bare frame device isn’t bad enough, there’s a cover available in a variety of colors which makes the whole contraption seem even more weird. Like you’ve got some sort of throat disease in fact. Ho hum! We’re trying to be charitable here, and maybe the whole thing is incredibly comfortable and the perfect solution for tired bodies, but wow, that design.
