Site44 turns Dropbox folders into websites

What’s the use of having all this global connectivity stuff if you can’t use it quickly and easily to distribute your data? Most of us at one time or another have yearned for a way to broadcast a simple website to colleagues, friends or family, but found the process too tedious to complete. Well now there’s a way to do it that makes use of one of the world’s most popular file sharing service.

Site44.com is a new service which lets you convert a simple Dropbox folder into a public facing website. Just connect the two services together by clicking the Get Started button and the system will create a folder with a ready to edit index.html file in it, complete with it’s own yoursite.site44.com web domain.

The free service allows you to create 5 websites and use up to 100 MB of data bandwidth a month, while there are also paid versions starting at $4.95 a month which offers 10 sites and 10GB a month. You can also connect your own custom domain to the service if you’re geek enough to cope with CNAME tech.

The new service only copes with static content (although Javascript is supported) so you won’t be able to build magically morphing Flash sites or anything annoying like that, and you really need to be comfortable with HTML and all that jazz before attempting to do anything other than the most rudimentary stuff. But it’s an interesting service nonetheless and we’re sure there’s a market for it out there somewhere.

If only for people who hate FTP.
