MetroFiets are cargo bikes that might as well be cars

When it comes to purchasing a new car, you know that you’re going to drop a good hunk of money. Of course, that’s just the beginning as you’ll have to keep putting in gas, oil, and keep up with general maintenance. If you like to make your mode of transportation a bit more manual, then you’ll want space to store whatever you’re carrying, as you won’t have a trunk in the back.

The MetroFiets are cargo bikes that want to be your new way to get from point A to point B. They can be made in a variety of ways, but don’t look like your traditional bicycle with a basket in the front. The cargo hold will be between you and your front wheel, which is a bit different than normal. This must be a working method though seeing as these things start out at a price of $3,599. If you had an extremely specific purpose for buying this thing, like a roving hot dog stand, I could understand the purchase. However, I doubt everyone is going to be falling over themselves to spend as much as they would on a car for a bike.

  • Come to Copenhagen or Amsterdam and you'll see them everywhere :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freight_bicycle

  • Very popular in the Netherlands for ferrying the little tykes to and from school.
A bike can be parked on the pavement in front of all the homes en route and inside the school gates.
They have to be good quality, sturdily built – you wouldn't want to come back from the school run and tell all the parents involved that you lost some kids along the way.

  • You got the , in the right place, but too many 9s in the price…. I don't think there are many cars you'd buy new for less than $4000.

    • Oops…now fixed. Thanks Bryan.
