Pop! Goes the…sponges?

If there is one thing I don’t want in the kitchen, it’s a dirty sponge. You buy more to replace the one you toss, but they’re too big to store in a drawer, and end up being underneath the damp sink. It may seem silly to care about a sponge, but if you know what sort of things they can carry, you’ll want to keep things organized and tidy.

The Pop-Up Sponges may look like an ordinary yellow sponge, but they come to you at a sixth of the size of a normal one! Immersed in water, they “pop” to full size, and can be kept clean from a run on the top rack of the dishwasher. They run about $16-17 for a set of six, which means you can store them all in a kitchen drawer where it’s safe and dry. Honestly, this is all about novelty. This is just an adult version of those little figurines you could get from the dollar store that would grow six times their size if you put them in water. It will be fun for about 30 seconds six times over, but that’s about it.

  • My local Trader Joe's carries this same product, but I get 12 sponges for less money.

  • They look like a thicker version of the sponges used to clean soldering iron tips…

  • Oh, these have been around for at least 30 years.
