Skype continues to dominate the Internet phone market, with over 663 million registered users, and the sheer scale of the free and paid service has spawned a whole ecosystem of add-ons and additional services.
There are quite a number of Skype recorders available, with several free ones for recording audio, but for the first time a video recording add-on has been announced.
Free Video Call Recorder for Skype is, as the name suggests, a free video recorder for Skype (d’oh) which can record either both sides to a conversation, the other side’s video only, or just audio.
The software comes from the well known DVDVideoSoft team, which already offer a suite of video tools which we have reported on previously. This particular tool, like many such, uses the popular open source FFMPEG as the backend, which means it’s built on top of solid foundations.
One issue is you can’t seem to save your destination folder for the recordings (it reverts to a generic default folder after restart) which could be a bit annoying if you like to keep things orderly. Nevertheless a welcome addition to the Skype family of tools.
