Utter! – so long Siri, this is what real smartphone voice control looks like [Freeware]

utter!

It’s a funny thing, software. Sometimes it’s not the prettiest of products which work the best, nor even the ones with the best marketing, but instead it’s a surprise coming out of left field, which manages to deliver amazing functionality with no fancy interface and zero marketing.

Utter! is a new voice control app for Android which provides no fancy interface or clever slogans, but just does what it’s supposed to do out of the box. What makes this particular app so special is that it has been designed from the start to deliver more functionality than any other voice command product so far, including Vlingo and Siri.

Not only can you do obvious things like ask for the weather and time and stuff like that, but you can set it up to control apps, take screenshots, run complex tasks, access and upload to online services and much more. The tradeoff is you have to stick to a fairly rigid command set, so it’s not as free form voice recognition as the rivals. But if you’re prepared to put in the effort to memorize the most important part of the command set, then you will literally be amazed by what you can achieve using nothing more than a word or two. Watch the video below to be astonished.

Want more? If you have the Jelly Bean version of Android (4.1 up) installed, then the software can work offline, which is something no-one else does. This means you can use it even when you’re out of cell range, or you’ve got data switched off because you’re internationally roaming. There’s far too much in it to run through here, you’ll just have to take our word for it and install. It’s free, but do be aware that it’s also in beta, so it’s not a completely finished product.

We’ve been playing with it for a few days and while we found a couple of glitches (for some reason it keeps translating ‘male’ as ‘mail’ which meant we had to become a ‘female’ for the review) overall it delivers a lot of those ‘wow’ moments that are so enjoyable with cool phone apps. Spend some time with it and you’ll see what we mean.
