Dukto – absolutely brilliant cross platform file mover is a must have tool [Freeware]

OK, answer this question. How many times have you wanted to transfer a file, photo or other piece of information like an address or map from one computer in your home to another device like a different laptop, phone or tablet? And how did you do it, with a USB stick or cable, or maybe via a CD or perhaps in desperation you even emailed it? Yep, me too, guilty as charged. Well forget your past woes, we’ve just found the perfect answer.

Dukto is a free cross platform program which lets you transfer files from one device on your network to another in an instant, with no set up, configuration or any other hassles at all. It’s quite simply the easiest program of its type we’ve ever found.

Just install the program on your devices – there are versions for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, RIM and Apple iOS – and that’s it. The program automatically picks up all the other devices on your network, and all you need to do to transfer a photo, file or whatever, is click on the icon of the remote device, choose your mode and select the file or folder. You can also drag & drop if that’s your bag.

In seconds the transfer is made. That’s it. The interface is absolutely superb, child easy to use, and there’s no complicated feature bloat at all. What’s most impressive is that unlike EVERY other program we’ve ever used (and reviewed here too) this one works every time. We’ve used it to transfer from an Android phone to desktop, from a Windows PC to a Ubuntu Linux laptop and every time it just worked, and incredibly fast.

You can send files, folders, text snippets, even stuff stored on your clipboard. It’s perfect for moving data around your office or home from device to device, and the zero config means you can also store it on a USB stick and carry it around with you to help transfer files on machines you don’t own. The only caveat we have is the Android version relies on QT technology, which means that there are some glitches in the code, which is not the fault of Dukto.

The name Dukto comes from the Esperanto meaning ‘pipe’. We think it should be renamed ‘brila’ for brilliant. Get it now!

  • How about … Dropbox? I use it on all devices so sharing files is as simple as dropping them into the the Dropbox folder …

    • I think the problem I find with Dropbox is you need to copy/paste files into folders, and it's not so intuitive. Also I've now switched off Dropbox on most of my machines because it sucks up disk space.
