You know what’s outstanding about the Web? The fact that one guy can sit down in a small country somewhere and produce stuff that is mind-blowing in concept and delivery. Seriously, that’s what makes the whole Internet thing so amazing, and it’s what scares the pants off Big Co. executives when they try to plan for the future.
My Cloud Players is a sweet suite of online services, created by Gorancho Sirkarovski in Norway, which is based around the massively popular SoundCloud audio storage site. The resulting product lets you listen to and download the SoundCloud library of music, sliced and diced whichever way you want. But we’re not just talking a simple music player here, there’s much much more.
As well as the track and playlist organizer, which offers selections based on genre, artist and popularity, there’s also a full featured Music Stations app, which you can use to enjoy music culled from SoundCloud users themselves. Think of it like a crowdsourced playlist, wrapped up in a colorful icon interface. And there’s more.
The Charts app gives a rolling breakdown of the most popular music on SoundCloud at any one time, a dynamic live Top 50 to rival Billboard. The results are again created from user plays, so it directly reflects the choice of the people, which is a very powerful way to sample new music and find great stuff. Any user can opt in to add to the chart, all they have to do is connect their My Cloud Player account with their SoundCloud account.
Finally there’s a tool for those who want to get more involved in their music, a DJ app which gives you the power to create your own sets on the fly, using a browser based tool. It’s not as full featured as standalone products of this type (there’s no automation settings for instance) and it only runs in Chrome and other webkit browsers, but it’s definitely good enough to deliver a really cool experience with a very short learning curve.
SoundCloud now reaches over 180 million people, and users of the service apparently post 10 hours of music and audio to the site every minute, so there’s an absolutely massive collection of music tracks building up on there every day. With the use of the My Cloud Players interface, all of this amazing material suddenly becomes as accessible as a YouTube video clip, which is a game changer.
The choice of independent and mainstream artists is huge, and there’s enough music on here to cater for anyone’s taste, no matter how esoteric. You want to know just how cool this suite is? There’s even a link to push a selected music playlist to your cell phone using a QR barcode. Create the playlist, hit the Mobile Link icon and the service will serve up the barcode for you to scan with the phone. Result, an instant mobile web jukebox for you to enjoy wherever you are. Awesome stuff.
