Cell phones and cars are natural partners. The ability to bolt a mobile computer to your windscreen is a great way to take advantage of all sorts of cool apps and functionality that you probably don’t really need, but is good for showing off to the neighbors.

The problem is that most car mounts, the things you use to do the actual ‘bolting’, are pretty useless. Either they don’t stick to your dash or windscreen properly, or they make it hard to clamp the phone on. Enter the OSO Dash Grip, which is billed as having ‘the strongest suction cup in the world‘.

Well we’re not sure whether we can test that without going to a huge amount of bother, but what we will say is that it certainly worked brilliantly for us. The key bit is the fact that the cup has both a sticky component as well as the typical suction action. The combination of the two makes sure that it really does stick to whatever you attach it to.

But it doesn’t stop there. What we really like about the device is the fact that it’s so quick and easy to attach and detach the phone or satnav. There’s no clumsy clamping mechanism, just a simple set of spring loaded jaws. Open the jaws, pop the phone in and the job’s done. It also means there’s nothing to get in the way of the power cable, and if you use the camera for any apps (such as a dash mount black box camera) there’s nothing to get in the way of the lens.

We haven’t tried clamping the unit to all kinds of surfaces yet, but things like wood, rippled plastic, and other tricky stuff posed no problem to the mount. As long as the surface is flat enough to maintain the suction and the sticky, you’re good to go. The product is available in both black and white, and is priced at around $29.99 or £19.99.
