FX Guru – probably the most fun you can have with your phone camera [Freeware]

There are times when you want to do serious stuff with your smartphone, and times when you just want to, like, have fun. For the former we’ll just point you in the direction of a mind numbing mathematics app, which should keep you occupied for an hour or so.

But for the enjoyment part, let us introduce you to FX Guru, probably the most fun you’ll have with your phone camera. The app is available for Android phones right now, with iPhone due soon, and it’s nothing less than a Hollywood special effects team in your phone. So what can you do with it?

Well how about filming aliens landing, or blowing up your boss’ car, or sending a Mech robot attack to do some serious damage to your neighbor’s house? The app comes with 3 free effects included, a satellite crash, a UFO scene and some nicely explosive TNT barrels, and you can also buy a megapack of 13 additional effects for around $9.99 or individual effects for $0.99 each.

It’s very easy to use. Just choose your scene, start the effect you want to use, and line everything up in the scene. Press the start button, and the app will start videoing the scene for several seconds. Press the finish button and the effect and the video are merged, after which you can upload direct to YouTube or share with friends in the usual way. The finished footage is also stored on your phone.

The three free effects give a good idea of the kind of thing you can do, and if you need anything more exotic, just buy the effect you want for your home movie. The app only uploads at maximum 480p, irrespective of the resolution of your phone camera, and the clips are pretty short, but it’s still enough to have fun and impress people. Go on, relax, grab your rocket launcher and say hello to Simpkins in accounts.
