The Plate-Oh plate – the reusable paper plate

Plate-Oh 1

As convenient at paper plates are, they aren’t the most eco-friendly choice. Once used, they can’t be recycled and wind up dumped in landfills. Designer Sahar Madanat Haddad has come up with a better idea.

Plate-Oh 2

The Plate-Oh is a biodegradable plate made of 10 pressed-together paper layers. Use the plate and, when done, simply peel back the top layer and toss it. Now you have a “new” plate to use. That gives it a lot of advantages. First, it means buying far fewer paper plates. Just one Plate-Oh is the equivalent of 10 regular paper plates! This cool design will save countless trees and landfill space. It also means there’s no clean up after each use, which saves water.

The natural adhesive holds each layer in place at the outer edges, except on one corner. The plate is light, compact and simple to use. No word yet as to when it will be available commercially. But it definitely looks like a winning idea!

  • Neat idea, but a few “questions” are not addressed…….”Does the plate grow;”weaker”, as each layer is removed?” “Not all meals are; “of only one food”, what keeps the fruit salad, from running into the mashed potatoes?” “How “knife friendly”, are the layers? Just one;”deep cut” and have you ruined all the underlying layers? or, maybe;2 or 3 of them?”
Might be great, for use as either a “finger foods plate”, or maybe a “one entree offering”, but as a complete replacement, for all paper plates? I don’t think so,
