GeoGuessr – the funnest travel game you can play without leaving the couch

Oh Google Maps what would we do without you? With your quirky little cars and their cameras, and your willingness to travel to the furthest ends of this small planet of ours to map out our nations.

One day we’ll look back and what Google has done for the cartographic business and be amazed, but in the meantime why don’t we just ignore all the incredible stuff and play a fun game? GeoGuessr (no third ‘e’) is a very simple game indeed. The app drops you into an unidentified Google street map location, and you have to guess where you are on the Google map box top right. That’s it.

Now the trick is how you play it. If you’re a purist you can simply stick a pin into the map as a wild guess, using your deep expertise of flora and fauna to identify the continent perhaps? Or you can try spending some more time traveling the road you’re on until you locate a sign or some other indicator of your country and location. Or you can literally travel the route until you identify exactly where you are on the map, do a Google search and then stick the pin in the exact place.

We tried all three options and got ourselves 16,400+ points, which we think is pretty good. It’s a fun time waster and you get the added bonus of visiting some of the most beautiful places on the planet, so how bad can that be? The only thing we’d prefer is to have a Timer option, so you can get more points for selecting the location quicker, or maybe win a special prize or something?

Quibbles apart, we love this to bits. Hold on, we’ll be right back. Just popping off to sunny South Africa for a second.
