Neocities – yay…Geocities is back and it wants you to enjoy yourself all over again

Remember Geocities? That brash, vulgar, messy glorious website building community that defied all the odds to become one of the biggest web services of its time? We loved it. In 1999 Yahoo! bought it, and in typical fashion shut it down in 2009. At the shutdown there were 38 million user pages on Geocities. Go figure.

Well what goes round comes round, and now one enterprising chap called Kyle Drake has decided to try and resurrect the free, no holds barred fun filled experience of building your very own static website in 10 MB of space. He’s calling it Neocities (geddit?) and he’s also gone and made it completely open source as well.

And we’re in love all over again. He and his small team are relying on user donations to fund the servers and already he’s received enough money to support 2 million sites for up to 2 years, which is a pretty awesome start. The project is in a very early stage of development, but already the design and interface promise great things. We can’t wait until they release the visual editor, which should make it much easier to build your site, since at the moment you need to know how to handle HTML, which is a bit of a drag for us normals.

Luckily that hasn’t stopped a bunch of people from diving in to create their own sites, and from the looks of it, there’s going to be less blinky text and more cool stuff than the original Geocities offered up to the world. We’ll be watching this with glee and avid interest. Go happy campers, go.

  • Pass… I learned my lesson when Geocities/Yahoo screwed me over. Yahoo users got the preference when when there was a member name conflict. Neocities will do the same…

  • Neocities, despite its name, is NOT owned by Yahoo. It’s an independent open source project, and thus what you say is nonsense.
People talk about stuff without having the slightest clue…

    • Er…did you actually read the post?
