FlyNano – Because everybody deserves a James-Bond-style flying machine

FlyNano

You’ll have to excuse me for a moment because the sheer awesomeness of this futuristic flying machine existing today has struck me momentarily speechless.

Nope; still speechless, but I’ll do my best to muddle through as I drool over the FlyNano (great vehicle; meh name).

More than a hang-glider but less than a plane. That’s more than just a catchy slogan I just dreamed up; it means it might be possible to hop into your very own FlyNano and take off into the wild blue yonder without having to mess with pesky grown-up stuff life aviation licenses or medical certifications, although the classification of this unique aircraft is left up to national authorities so the rules could be different, depending on where you call home.

Designed to fly up to 10,000 feet above sea level at speeds of 87 miles per hour, the electric-powered aircraft really only has two strikes against it… and one of those is a minor quibble.

First off, the FlyNano is for water operation only. The boatlike body has no landing gear of any kind so a large body of water is needed in order to take off or land. Still, not a bad thing if you live a reasonable distance from a lake or ocean.

The second issue, which is more serious if you’re the impatient type, is merely one of timing. The futuristic machine is still just a tad in the future, meaning you can’t place an order now and expect to have this thing in your garage by Christmas. However, you can purchase an Option to Buy, which works as a reservation for buying the FlyNano, and the option price is applied to the purchase price so it’s not like you’d be paying twice for the same thing. On the bright side, it provides a little time to sock some extra dough aside.

How much does it cost to tackle the sky? The basic version is €35,000/$47,005, with the transferable Option to Buy costing €900/$1,208.70.
