FaceRig – Who do you want to be when you chat?

FaceRig FaceRig Who do you want to be when you chat?

There was a time when a person could let their hair down at home while still interacting with the outside world through things like email and instant messaging, but technology has caught up with us, meaning the outside world can see our unwashed, unshaven, make-up free faces without us ever leaving the comfort of our home? Why put forth the real unkempt you when another face can be substituted? Who do you want to be?

Picture this: You’re into your third day of a week-long vacation and the boss sends a text saying he wants to Skype with you about something important… because it’s always important in his mind, right? You can either polish yourself up for what will probably only take up ten minutes of your life, or you can use FaceRig to put someone’s face in your place.

While it looks like your boss would have to settle for a cartoon character in place of your real face at this point in time, FaceRig could possibly one day portray a polished-up version of yourself. After all, if real time expression tracking, on-the-fly animation re-targeting, and rendering/lighting of the animated model in real time can be used to make you look like a furry fox or a video-game-style demon, why not use that same technology to look like an improved you?

The software developers are working on raising funds right now with an Indiegogo campaign but they have big plans that include providing at least ten digital actors and backgrounds to start with, and creating a wide variety of platforms to suit as many people as possible (home, commercial, mobile).

FaceRig isn’t just for business purposes either. Since anyone with a webcam will be able to instantly embody any character they want, it will open up a whole new dimension of interaction for gamers, comic creators, digital artists, and anybody else that would enjoy looking like a virtual character while chatting face-to-face.

At the moment, the campaign has raised $65,635 of their $120,000 goal, with donations being accepted until February 5, 2014, and they have a wide range of contribution levels going from $1.00 to $2000.00.

This idea is too cool to be ignored. Somebody is going to make it happen. Why not these guys?
