It’s amazing what you can do with a bit of creativity and the right attitude nowadays. Of course it also helps if you’ve got an artistic eye, and the folks at Concrete Revolution seem to have that in spades. Their specialty is taking standard concrete and turning it into something else entirely.
For those who don’t know, concrete has been around for ever in various forms, although the first big users seemed to be the Greeks and Romans. The Coliseum in Rome is made of the stuff, and in fact concrete is the world’s most widely used man-made material.
Which makes it even more cool to see these guys turning this sand and cement formulation on its head to create very interesting results, including faux wood, tiling and other household finishes.
From looking at their site, it seems that they use a combination of brute force carving, with some rather exotic coatings and polishing to deliver the end result. Which can be pretty amazing. Apparently the finish is also durable, and won’t need any kind of refreshing for around 7 to 10 years in normal use.
It’s pretty amazing stuff, although we’re not told exactly how much it costs to deliver this kind of amazingness. For one thing getting surface smooth and absolutely level to begin with is not a trivial matter unless you know what you’re doing. Very cool.
