CarLock – protect your car from theft in seconds

carlock

Here’s another of those ‘why did it take so long’ products, that make total sense. What could be easier than to hook your car alarm system up to the vehicle’s standard OBD connector (typically a socket under the steering wheel in the foot well area), to make it instantly trackable?

The idea behind CarLock is simple. Immediately the car is moved, the system will alert you on your smartphone via a standard GSM SIM card inside the OBD device. There’s also a GPS chipset in there, so you can also track your car when and if it starts moving without authorization. Or maybe even with?

The only real problem we can see with this is once thieves get to know about it, the first thing they’re going to do is unplug it and throw it out the window as they roar off. Although, to be fair, at that point you will already be notified that your car is on the move without you in it, which should give you a significantly better chance of retrieving the thing before it disappears to Abu Dhabi or wherever.

The product costs €99 to buy and there’s a €4.99 monthly charge to cover the cost of the SIM card service embedded in the little OBD box. Clever.
