CommBadge – Star Trek Communicator arriving soon on a lapel near you

We keep checking our post box, but so far there’s no sign of the flying car we ordered back in 1970, but there are signs that the techs are trying their hardest to give us some other promised goodies as fast as they can.

The CommBadge, from US company CommBadge Technology Inc, is a Bluetooth compatible communication device which lets you do all that cool Star Trek stuff like tap and give orders, just like a proper starship commander. The product connects to your iOS or Android smartphone via low energy Bluetooth, which should mean a decent amount of battery life, and is activated with a single press.

The actual work of acting on your commands is left to the Siri or Google Now voice recognition software on the phone, which means the product should benefit over time as the technology from the giant companies improves. For now though, you’ll be limited to giving the kind of orders these apps understand. So no ‘fire phasers, and warp drive outta here’ type stuff at the moment, kids.

The product is scheduled to ship in quantity in July of this year, for a price of around $99 each, and can be ordered in a variety of colors. There’s also a name badge version for use in more professional areas, such as medical and corporate.
