AirRider – the vacuum cleaner that thinks it’s a hovercraft

Fifty years ago we were all told to wait by the door because soon someone would come knocking with a household robot to sweep, clean and polish all our troubles away. They lied. Instead we’ve been fobbed off with some stupid flat round carpet cleaners and a trash compactor. Not fair.

They’re trying though, and maybe this new AirRider hovering vacuum cleaner points the way to a more fulfilling life in the future? Somehow we doubt it. The cleaning machine works by using the exhaust air from your vacuuming session (notice how we say ‘your‘, because ain’t no way we’re going to do it again) to lift the unit off the floor on a cushion of air.

It all sounds rather impressive, but we’re wondering just how loud the thing is, what with all that hovering and hoovering (sorry couldn’t resist) going on? The product features a full HEPA filter to cope with those microbes you don’t need, and comes with more accessories than an aircraft carrier. It weighs 6.5 lbs, has a 20 foot cord and will cost you $249.99.

  • Not a new idea. Hoover made one in the 1950’s:

  • It would blow the dust and pet hair all over the place, like trying to use a leaf blower upwind in a gale!
But thanks very much to Chris Torkildson for the link to thegreenhead.

    • maybe not. I expect the air going in any one direction might be relatively small. Even so, that air has to go somewhere, and there aren’t many directions that won’t blow some dust around. The real question is whether or not you have the same kind of control you would have with a good set of plastic casters.
