Solar Electric Scooter – gives you 1 mile of range for every hour of sunlight it receives

Apparently they can now make solar panels tough enough to bear the weight of a person up to 158kgs, which is pretty amazing all in itself. But the result is we now can rejoice in the technology which gives an electric scooter which can run for free.

The Solar Electric Scooter delivers a range of 15 to 20 miles on a full charge, and a top speed of 15 mph. It weighs a sturdy 65 lbs, most of which is the battery, and is foldable for carrying around. As well as the solar panel, you can also use a more conventional charging process, such as a wall plug which will take anything from 2 to 8 hours to complete.

We’re guessing that you’ll need some pretty consistent full sunshine to get the charging levels anywhere near maximum on this puppy, and of course if you’re riding it at the time, you’re going to be disturbing the sun’s rays falling on the panel, which will further hinder the efficiency. Still it’s an interesting idea, even if the purchase price at a couple of thousand dollars is quite steep.

  • This looks pretty cool. As long as your commute is less than 8 miles, you should be good.

    • Apparently the deck gets very hot in strong sunlight though. So no barefeet sidewalk surfing.
