The security camera market is about as large as our fears of being robbed, cheated and broken into, so it’s not surprising that there’s a lot of apps available for smartphones which will offer a new way of tackling the problem. There’s a new product, however, which seems to be getting a lot of friends because of its ease of use and low cost.
AtHome Camera is a cross platform (iOS and Android) smartphone app which turns any old smartphone or tablet (or Windows PC) into a security camera to watch over you and yours. Just install the app on the device you want to use as a camera and set up the connection to your home WiFi or 3G service, and note down the ID you get. Then when you’re out and about, you can use the same ID to access the camera remotely and spy on your premises from afar.
It’s not rocket science, and it’s not the first to do this, but the interface is nice and clean, and easy to use, which is always a good sign. The fact that they also have a pretty full function free version (with ads and limited to 15 minutes recording a day) is also neat, especially since you can set it up to do motion triggered recording only.
