Making websites has definitely become more of a science than an art nowadays, what with the popularity of things like WordPress, Weebly and other site makers. But even with these systems there’s still a ton of work needed to actually make a site look good, as anyone who’s struggled with a WordPress theme will tell you. If you’re not a designer, the results can quickly and easily become horrible.
Single Page Guru is the website maker for people who aren’t designers, but know great design when they see it. You’ll still need a tiny bit of familiarity with webcode – most particularly how to upload files to a webhost – in order to use the service, but it’s really easy if you have that level of knowledge.
What’s really great about the service is the fact that it’s bang up to date, in terms of using state of the art web technologies. HTML5, single page layout and all that jazz. This means you’re getting something that will look totally modern and hip when you’re finished. The other awesome bit, which is crucial, is the choice of design elements. The theme headers are stunning, and cover a huge range of topical and generic categories. Want to set up a photographic site? A cafe? A nature conservancy? No worries, there’s something for everyone.
Once you’ve selected your theme (which you can change at any time during the build process), you can start to add in elements to build up your page. We’re literally talking drag and drop easy here, just pull in a section and you’ll get a space for text and images, or a gallery, or a contact form or…etc. It takes seconds to do, and the results always look amazing.
You also get a choice of fonts to use, although we’d recommend you stick with the simple default, because it looks great in most cases, and you can change background colors to make your site more personal. The only thing that’s missing is the ability to add your own images for the main theme, but that’s a small quibble, and it would ruin the symmetry of the whole package immediately.
Once you’re done, just select to download the resulting site to your computer via email – free for personal and a mere $20 for commercial use – and you’re done. When the zip file arrives, extract the four folders, upload them to your webhost with your friendly FTP program (we use Filezilla) and you’re done. You are now the proud owner of a stonking looking website for your business, hobby, passion or fun. Absolutely superb! Recommended.
