Streisand – anti censorship server set up with a one line command

streisand

We’re not exactly sure what this is all about, in terms of the hard core technology, but the end result seems to be rather impressively scary for those who might wish to damp down on free speech over teh internets.

Streisand (named for obvious reasons) is an ultra techie way for someone to set up a fully encrypted, and masked web server – along with a whole raft of ‘anti-censorship’ software – just by typing out a single one line command.

So let’s get this completely straight, this is not – yet! – a job for anyone without a degree in computer science, or at least a deep understanding of server management, but if this technology can be done at all, as it has, then it’s only a matter of time before someone clever wraps it all up in a nice little package that anyone can use, and things will get really interesting.

Why is this useful? Well for one thing, it lets people who are under threat from hostile agencies set up a protected environment within which they can communicate and disseminate information to help survive the threats. The idea is it should be snoop-proof, and also extremely portable, so if one web server gets shut down, the whole thing can be moved elsewhere in the twinkling of an eye. Fascinating.
