Nanoleaf Bloom – the first bulb in the world to turn an ordinary light switch into a dimmer

Back in November of last year we reported on the Nanoleaf, a clever ultra low power LED bulb which uses a fraction of the electricity of a standard bulb and lasts a heck of a long time without degrading the light intensity. Well the team is back with a new product which looks even more interesting.

The Nanoleaf Bloom is a new ultra low power LED bulb which will fit into any standard lamp socket, but this time there’s an added twist. The bulb can be used as normal, but also can be turned into a dimmable bulb just by using your normal on/off light switch to set it. So in order to set the bulb to a desired brightness, just flick the light switch on to get the light fading up, then do a quick off and on again to lock that brightness. It’s a supremely clever idea, and what’s more it has the potential to save a lot of money in terms of electricity consumption.

The bulb features the typical default 10W (equal to 75W) brightness at full beam, and you can set it to any variation you like when you turn it on. There’s also a special ‘night mode’ which can be activated by quickly flicking your light switch on/off/on again. Watch the video below for more details on the modes.

The product has blasted past its initial funding goal within hours of going live on the crowdfunding site, and deliveries of the $40 bulb are expected to start in December. We mentioned last time that the Canadian team had experience a fair number of teething and reliability problems with the first shipments of the earlier product, but looking at their new pitch video, it seems as though they may have learned from their mistakes. They’re also apparently now offering a 1 year guarantee on their products, which is definitely good news.
