Yay, it looks like we’re heading for a world where we never have to wash our clothes again. No wait… OK, so we’ll probably have to do a bit of washing for certain particular garments, but wouldn’t it be great if we never needed to worry about most of our wardrobe cleaning? Think of the money saved, not to mention the planet.
If this new T-shirt from Threadsmiths is anything to go by, we could be headed that way. The Cavalier is the first T-shirt to completely repel water and dirt from its surface. It’s made of 100% cotton, with a patented hydrophobic ‘nano-tech application‘ (for a minute there we thought they said nanny-tech, which would make more sense) which prevents the garment from accepting liquid spills.
The marketing blurb says the t-shirt will retain its water repellant status for up to 80 wash cycles (that’s 10 years for a student, 3 months for a mother), but you can restore the nano-tech functionality by tumble drying the garment every few washes. Sounds like a bargain. OK, so it’s not the non-wash product we were hoping for, but maybe, just maybe, we’re slowly moving towards that end result. The first versions will probably be delivered by a flying car.

The Cavalier is available for men and women (and soon children) at a price of $65 each. Well nobody said being a pioneer was cheap.
