OK, let’s get this straight, there are barcode scanners and then there are barcode scanners, know what we mean? For the longest time QR codes and the like have been hovering on the outskirts of mass adoption, but now we reckon they’re just about to become mainstream, and the reason is the tools are getting really good. Not just the scanners, but also the barcode creator tools. And we think we’ve found the best of breed of both types right now.

QuickMark is a free barcode scanner and creator which comes with a huge feature set and what’s more important, a wide range of platforms you can use it on. Yep, this is not just an Android and iPhone app, but also a program which will run on Windows, Mac and even as a browser extension if you’re a Chrome user.

And it’s not just the fact that it scans your barcodes and QR codes perfectly, but it’s a cinch to actually create them too. The Android app we tested will let you instantly create QR codes for everything from your location (although you do need to know your lat and long apparently, and weirdly) through to your contact details and even your WiFi details, which is very cool for easily giving people your WiFi password when they visit your home.

You can even edit and customize your created codes to give them a bit of style, for instance if you want to embed them on a business flyer or something else which needs a bit of branding oomph. The other useful thing is the app keeps a log of all the codes you’ve created and scanned, so you can refer back and keep tabs on what you’re doing. Nice touch.

If you want to take things one step further, you can sign up for an online account and make and store color QR codes, complete with logos, URL shorteners and statistics so you can track clicks and stuff like that. It’s great for marketing campaigns and other activities like events where you may need to track responses and geographies etc.

All in all this is a superb suite of tools for anyone who wants to take advantage of the new barcode revolution, either as a user or creator. The software is fast, easy to use and even the free version gives you just about everything you’ll need to get started. Recommended.
