Traffic lights are boring. But this past summer in Lisbon, Portugal, a new phenomena helped pedestrians stay safer and have fun too. The Dancing Traffic Light was created by the Smart Company, the same firm that brought us the Smart Car. This light was part of an ad campaign by Smart called #WhatAreYouFor as in For More Safety.
This innovative light has been configured to mimic dance moves from passersby. Pedestrians are encouraged to enter a nearby booth, select music then, when it’s time for traffic to move, begin dancing their hearts out. Through the use of a live video feed, the red manikin displayed in the traffic light shows the dance moves, to the amazement of nearby pedestrians.
It’s like a combined video game and virtual reality. You get to dance while people get entertained while stopping at the light. And they enjoy the wait. Who could complain about that?
The company says there are no plans to bring this cool light to any other cities. But who knows? Imagine if this cool traffic light came to cities in the United States? That would definitely make waiting for the light to change a blast!
