The good folk at Binatone have just released an updated model of The Brick its ultra retro, take it as you find it, smartphone accessory (or full phone, your choice). The idea is we’re clearly all pining for the good old days when mobile phones were heavier than a wet bag of cement, and could only fit into a very large suitcase with wheels. Who would have thought?
In fact things get worse than that. Apparently, according to this CNN piece, flip phones are now big with hipsters. They’re leaving their iPhones in their pocket and dragging out the flip because it’s so much cooler and easier to use. Right!
As if that wasn’t enough, the media is currently all awash with reports that Microsoft has launched a phone which you don’t have to charge for a MONTH (breathless Daily Mail exclamation alert). The Nokia 215 is indeed a very interesting handset, but the key part about the battery life is the fact that the thing only has a 2.4 inch screen, no 3G, no GPS and no touch.
So yes, it’s a phone which has come to us straight from the late 80s. There’s a reason we struggle with battery life in current tech, and that’s because we’re asking our devices to do more and more. So strip away the features and everyone can produce a 30 day battery life. Oh and a $29 price point. How stupid are we supposed to be here?
Just give us bigger batteries already.
