Arcimoto – electric fun trike

arcimoto

There have been no shortage of ‘alternative’ electric vehicles over the years, and unfortunately most of them share the same struggle to gain traction in a market which expects convention. Hence the demise of products like the Aptera, while the Tesla marches on.

We’re hoping this new Arcimoto doesn’t follow in the same footsteps as the rest. It’s a cute three wheeled motorbike, which features a fully enclosed cage and two seats, with enough room for the groceries too. For some reason it just looks safe, which is always a good start.

The nearest to this at the moment is the Renault Twizy of course, which is actually on the road at a half decent price, although it doesn’t seem half so refined in drive terms as this Arcimoto does in the videos. We also like the fact that the designers have introduced a swap-out power case, which means owners should be able to upgrade battery options as the tech improves.

The sad fact is that up against established products like the Twizy (above), this product is likely to struggle in the main markets, which is why we hear the company is now focusing its attention on selling the idea (and the first production units we assume) into the developing world. Let’s hope they can make it at the right kind of price to combat already established Chinese electric brands.

There’s no word on price for the finished product, just an invitation to invest $100 in a pre-order. Not a hugely reassuring sign.

  • The Renault can’t be registered in Australia because quad bikes aren’t allowed on the road, trikes can be registered so there is a chance that if it meets the registration requirements it may be allowed on Australian roads where other vehicles are not allowed. You’d need a motorcycle licence and a helmet if it were allowed.
