Projection equipment has long been a mainstay of the business world, if only for those interminable meetings full of Powerpoint slides. But they’ve also made big inroads into the living rooms of those who enjoy their entertainment at a super large size. Traditionally these projectors have been large, heavy and rather clunky, but no more. The new generation of LED projectors really takes things to a different level.
The Viewsonic PLED-W600 LED Projector is a ultra-lightweight and yet bright projector which delivers the kind of quality you would normally associate with much higher priced units. LED projectors still do command a price premium over their older halogen lamp cousins, but this difference is declining all the time, while the quality of the LED products has been improving steadily. See our video below for an overview of the projector’s features.
The PLED-W600 comes in a typically robust box containing a nice selection of accessories and common tools. Inside the box you’ll find the necessary power block and cables, as well as the remote control, HDMI cable, a decent enough user manual and a dinky little carry bag for all your portable projection needs.
The first thing you notice about the product is how small and light it is. There’s no heavy lamp and cooling system inside this puppy, just a very efficient LED lamp system. This gives advantages not just with weight, but also with heat, so you’ll notice the projector runs much cooler than other projectors. The unit also consumes a fraction of the power of a traditional LCD or DLP halogen lamp projector, and the LED lamp will last up to 20x longer, in this case up to 30,000 hours.
The PLED-W600 also gives a commendably bright and clear image from the 600 lumens lamp, which is testament to the fact that it also sports a great WXGA resolution, which is good enough to offer native 720p HD up to 80 inches from around 8 feet. This makes it perfect for small rooms as well as larger meeting areas.
The other cool thing about the product is the fact that you can input both standard HDMI as well as an MHL signal. What this means is you can directly connect tablet computers and smartphones which support the MHL USB standard, which covers most good quality brands. This is very useful if you’re using your phone or tablet as your main computer platform, instead of a laptop. It also means less to carry around.
The key feature of this very nice little projector is exactly that – size and weight. If you’re fed up with lugging around a big clunky projector for your entertainment or business needs, then this is a product which will warm the cockles of your heart. It’s small enough to stick into your bag, along with an external amp/speaker if you need louder than the 2W from the integrated speaker system. Connect up your phone, grab the handy remote control and bingo, you’ve got a really cool multimedia set up which won’t break the bank or your back.
The fact that you’ll also avoid the massive hassle of lamp burn outs which can ruin traditional projector use, and you’re talking a wiser investment than you might think. Sure it won’t match the sheer brightness of more expensive halogen lamp projectors, but at 600 lumens we found the output to definitely be well worth watching. Even without a fully dark room. Nice.
