Avantree Powerhouse – desktop USB charger for those with far too many gadgets [Review]

We all have far too many gadgets which need charging. Smartphones, tablets, music players, wireless speakers. The list goes on. So it is no surprise that there are more and more multi-chargers coming on to the market. These devices allow you to charge up a number of products at the same time, very convenient. We review a new model, the Avantree Powerhouse.

First impressions
The Powerhouse comes in a nice box, along with a nice collection of accessories. These include the blocks which hold different device thicknesses, as well as Velcro straps and cables. All in all there is enough to make sure you can cope with just about every device charging need. See our test video below for more detail.

In use
The charging block is surprisingly easy to use, and also very effective. I tested the charging by first charging up an iPhone 6 with a standard Apple iPad charger, which took around 1.5 hours from 0 to 100%. Then I charged the same phone up using the Powerhouse, and it came out to charge in the same time. Faster than standard smartphone chargers!

I also tested an iPad Air with a case on it, to see how thick the devices could be, and it worked fine. But that’s about the maximum size you will be able to squeeze in between the blocks. One disappointment is the fact that you cannot change the location of the blocks on the charger, and it would be nice to have an on/off switch somewhere.

Conclusion
The Avantree Powerhouse charger is a neat, good looking charger which is versatile enough to handle up to four different devices. It works surprisingly well using the small blocks as holders, and we found no problems with different sizes of devices. Overall it works well.

Price: $44.99 / £29.99
