iNaturalist – the social network for nature lovers

brown-209106_1920

The world is a vast place filled to the brim with different types of lifeforms. So many that trained scientists can only capture so much. Good thing there are plenty of people armed with only curiosity out there to help out. iNaturalist is the social network designed to connect people interested in biodiversity and help further our understanding of the natural world.

This is almost like crowdsourcing science but instead of looking through images that scientists have collected, the crowd is collecting the observations and comparing them. It also doubles as a social media platform for people who are really, really into nature.

By engaging in this network, users can learn more about the natural world (hey, what is this plant I found?), help supply data, and meet people with a shared interest. The website and connected apps are free. All you need is curiosity and smartphone to snap pictures and share your findings. The site can be used to identify and catalogue many creatures and plants.
