Whither wireless television?

Freescaleuwbtv

Haier Corporation and Freescale Semiconductor yesterday demonstrated the world’s first Ultra-Wideband (UWB) enabled television displaying video streamed from a media server without any cables. Now sending video to televisions without wires is hardly new folks, is it, but the key thing here is that UWB will allow multiple wireless products to all mix and stream together at the super fast throughput needed for high definition video and audio. So we’re kind of looking at the future of high speed living room connectivity. But will it help me find the remote control down the back of the sofa, eh? That’s the crucial question. Oh, and don’t expect the 20 meter range to actually be 20 meters, will you?

“UWB gives consumers the freedom to place the television anywhere they would like in the room, without requiring a physical connection to a set-top box, digital video recorder or media server. We have worked closely with Freescale over the past two years on integrating UWB and look forward to continuing this collaboration with a variety of consumer products.”
