We don’t think about video games and their place in history as much more than nostalgia machines. But they’re more than that, they playable creative expressions and we’re losing them to the sands of time. The Video Game History Foundation is the organization that wants to save them.
This foundation’s goal is to preserve video games. Do you know they die overtime? Most people don’t because unlike, say paintings, we don’t have hundreds of years worth of samples to look back on. No one could know that after so many decades a cartridge would degrade. This isn’t such a problem for huge commercial successes but those little games that didn’t get a ton of game play? There aren’t many of those left around from the 80s and 90s.
Only part of the goal is to acquire and preserve games, the side of the coin is educating people on why saving these games is so important. Not everyone may agree but if you like video games, you can sign up for the mailing list to stay updated on their plans.
