Report Fake News – Facebook adds new features for flagging fake news

flags

We have a fake news problem on social media and both Google and Facebook have committed to helping fight the tide of misinformation. What they’re doing in the background isn’t something that’s going to affect most people but Facebook has a way you can get hands on with your help. They’ve updated their reporting feature specifically to help target this.

Now when you move to report content, there’s an option specifically for false news stories. It even lays out some guidelines for what qualifies as fake such as being purposefully deceitful or a disproven hoax. Using this feature, people can help clean up timelines and quietly dispel misinformation.

To that end, if you’ve ever reported something before, you may notice that Facebook has also added more information to explain their other reporting categories. The flag/report feature has been a tool used for abuse for quite some time so hopefully these clearer guidelines will help keep people from using it to target things they personally don’t like versus targeting things that are actually illegal or harmful.
